iPhone OS 4.0 Features

OS of next Apple iPhone 4.0 will have the following features:

Third-party Multitasking – iPhone 4.0 firmware will support multitasking and user interface will then resemble Apple’s desktop Expose feature. After tapping the Home button twice, an expose-like interface will bring up the currently running apps, prompting user for quick selection. Once the selection is made, the iPhone OS zooms out of the Expose task manager and transitions you to that running app. Finally, we will be getting multitasking officially. Multitasking feature is already available with rival mobile operating systems Android and webOS. Apple did not supported the said feature to save battery life.

Wireless Syncing – In order to compete with Android phones that never uses computer for syncing, apple must remove the middleman wherever “USB Connectivity” is required.

Live Wallpapers – Apple will include the feature but Android Phones like “Nexus One” has already witnessed Live Wallpapers as the phone’s background.

Add contacts to home screen – The feature will allow you to add contact shortcut at home screen such as a button that will call “Boss” directly. It looks quite hazy, but good if apple can incorporate this as well.

Better App management –Apple will introduce alternative solution to manage apps directly from iDevice itself.

Second camera – Once the iPhone 4.0 is announced, iPhone 4G/HD will arrive soon and it will be nice if Apple can add a second, front-facing camera for video chatting. We recently shared leaked iPhone 4G/HD LCD Screens providing the provison for second camera. Dying to see that happen!

If the said features goes missing in iPhone 4.0, there is a possibility that the features will be included either in iPhone OS 4.0.1 or iPhone 4.1 firmware.

iChat Features Hidden Within iPhone OS 4.0
Numerous sources are confirming that there are some hidden iChat features and commands found inside of iPhone OS 4.0 that could be a clear sign that we may see a iPhone/iPod iChat app from Apple.

By watching some of the processes running on the new firmware, an process by the name of iChatAgent was found running in the background along with some additional iChat code. Could this be video calling? Or will it only come with iPhone 4G? Both the code and a separate tip to 9to5Mac have also referenced an Apple-run site that, along with three internal sites, are likely being used to host and test video on the iPhone. An unconfirmed but thorough insider maintained that the site is waiting for a “jingle” from the iChat app itself to initialize the feature; without information about the app’s presence and connection quality it won’t do anything.

9 to 5 Mac has also shown references within the SDK to features such as moderators, chat rooms, encrypted video conferences, and more. Digging even further, the same notification noises that the desktop iChat application uses, can actually be found in the SDK as well.
